Wharfmaster Posted February 7, 2007 #1 Posted February 7, 2007 Here is a grouping of Nationalist Chinese wings and cap badge. The Wings are thin sew-on type, two piece and numbered. the Cap badge is one piece construction. The base metal on both under the gilt seems to be of a copper color and not brass. Items were not purchased together. Any thoughts? Thanks. The Wharfmaster
Wharfmaster Posted February 7, 2007 Author #2 Posted February 7, 2007 Reverse photo, second try. Too Many KBs.
Owen Posted April 18, 2011 #3 Posted April 18, 2011 I have never seen a photo of an AVG member wearing what appears to be a metal cap device. All the photos I'm familar with had bullion devices. Some years ago I had the chance to buy a visor cap with a metal device. I asked the late Dick Rossi about it. He called several of the other Tigers from the two other squadrons. None of them remember seeing metal cap devices.
MAA Posted April 18, 2011 #4 Posted April 18, 2011 The Chinese Pilot wing is a known reproduction. There was some guy sewing these to leather backings calling them "AVG ~ its purely B.S. The cap device looks legit, but is (post-WW2) era in type and style. Hope this helps you ~ Dave
COOKIEMAN Posted April 18, 2011 #5 Posted April 18, 2011 I agree, the wing is bogus. The cap badge is definitely post war. I purchased similar type cap badges when visiting Taiwan in 1967. Attached are two pictures. One shows two Chinese Aviation Cadets while attending flight school at Thunderbird Field. Notice the one on the left is wearing a bullion cap badge with an enamel sun. The second pix is of a U.S. made embroidered cap badge..
Wharfmaster Posted April 8, 2025 Author #6 Posted April 8, 2025 Anyone know exactly who, when and where the sew-on Chinese wings were made? My example came with a verified legit AVG patch. Thanks, W
pfrost Posted April 10, 2025 #7 Posted April 10, 2025 Hi Mr Wharf... or is it Mr Master? LOL I vaguely recall that these were sold in various magazines in the late 90- early 2000's. Flying magazines, history magazines, etc. But that may be an imperfect recollection. These types of things were often replicated for newer flying jackets as well. P
