I would like to have a few thoughts from you gents on an interesting detail on this seemingly average M1910 canteen cover I just picked up. If you will note, the date is 1916, a year before you start seeing any come out with LTD snaps. Member 'Flageguy and I were talking and the thought that perhaps it was an eagle snap was brought forward. It's a pea color like most earlier gear with a goldish khaki trim. Along with it came some of the nicest undated aluminum canteens I have seen.

Also, the reason I deem it 'transitional' is because it comes out at a time where they were still producing eagle snap covers. If anyone has real hard evidence on RIA making these I'd love to see it!

Well, all I can say is I'm really happy the LTD's are original to the cover! I have never seen nor heard of any dated 1916. Thank you Keystone and jprostack for the information and photos!

Yes, RIA was the only manufacturer that year.

Here are my two 1916 covers, one eagle snap and the other LTD.

Key, you beat me to posting a similar pic.

It is also worth noting the font for the date stamp.

R.I.A. would return to the "fatter" one line style beginning in 1917 then later that year the two line would appear.

So three variations for 1917 alone...so far.

I just checked my 1917 and it's a khaki single line! Now I have to look for the "double line" variation!!! Thanks Pep!

I have the M1910 RIA's dated from 1910 to 1919 (with the 2 1916's pictured above).

It seems like there is always another variant to look for. :)

It's an addiction.

An addictive obsession...I have discovered with a lot of help from Jon P over 20 variations of the cover between 1910 and 1919. (The RIA production years)

That includes the turnbuckle types, Mounted, Dismounted and trial pattern. Not to mention the M1917 types that replaced the mounted version.

The dated 1917 two line is rather hard to come by in good condition. You also need to get the dated 1917 single line green version (if you don't have it now). ;)

Hi,

Fourht version for 1917 one line.

Leo

I'm not a fan of that one.

It seems very new. Are there any inspection markings on the other flap?

Well lots of photo evidence for sure.

It was just the stamp seems so stylized.

Did not "feel" correct when I looked at it.

More than likely I'm wrong. I will check some first aid pouches I have.

Thinking more on it I may have a marking there that is similar.
