anton67 Posted December 5, 2015 #1 Posted December 5, 2015 Picked this one up today. I rarely if ever post TR items on this forum but this one is unique. It is unique because it has the Vet who brought it back's initials and ASN carved into it. I would love to ID the vet so if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
anton67 Posted December 5, 2015 Author #7 Posted December 5, 2015 Looks to me like the vet or the German soldier touched up the eagle. Ironically the German soldiers initials are written in the dome of the helmet.
Paul70 Posted December 5, 2015 #8 Posted December 5, 2015 Harold W Sherhart 17049923 from North Dakota born 1922
anton67 Posted December 5, 2015 Author #9 Posted December 5, 2015 That is frickin' awsome. Paul70 you are the best!!! Thank you That is really cool.
Dogface72 Posted December 5, 2015 #11 Posted December 5, 2015 He probably marked it with his name and ASR to deter theft by another unit before he could get it home......Nice piece.
katieony Posted December 5, 2015 #12 Posted December 5, 2015 Nice helmet with great provenance. Best of luck with your research on this veteran.
anton67 Posted December 6, 2015 Author #13 Posted December 6, 2015 Thank you all for your help. Like I said, I rarely post TR stuff on this forum but this was clearly brought back by a US vet.
sundance Posted December 6, 2015 #15 Posted December 6, 2015 Nice helmet. To bad Mr. Sherhart died young. Do you see evidence of the second decal?
anton67 Posted December 6, 2015 Author #16 Posted December 6, 2015 Yes, you can see in post #2 evidence of the tri-color decal being scratched off.
M24 Chaffee Posted December 6, 2015 #18 Posted December 6, 2015 Nice helmet! An M35 with the tri-color decal scratched off per German army regulations? It's cool that you posted this and got such quick information from some helpful members! Frank
anton67 Posted December 8, 2015 Author #19 Posted December 8, 2015 Thank you all for the information and your kind comments.
