Jeff TX Posted December 1, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2015 I need your help to ID the pictured helmet from the estate of a WWII vet who flew multiple CBI missions.
Bodes Posted December 1, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2015 I think it's a training helmet as it doesn't have place to mount the avionics.....Bodes

Jeff TX Posted December 2, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted December 2, 2015 I found several leather flight helmets that look like this unmarked one and they are Navy/Marine NAF-1092.
Sabrejet Posted December 2, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 2, 2015 No label? At first I thought it was an early AC B5 though the USN's Type 1092 helmet was very similar. ( See the link below) http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/101882-us-air-corps-b5-winter-flying-helmet/ As issued these helmets did not have any communications gear. Thus, molded leather ear-cups which held R-14 receivers were stitched on at unit level, as required. Sometimes, small holes were cut at ear level so that a headset could be worn over the flying helmet.
phantomfixer Posted December 2, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2015 from the dark pics, sewn straps, I would think it is a 1092W Navy helmet
Jeff TX Posted December 2, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted December 2, 2015 Sabrejet & Phantomfixer thank you for the historical information. I spent several hours reviewing our forums' archived flight helmet topics and your cranium summaries were very educational. Thanks again, Jeff
