Gold edged chevrons?

These are for sale on E-Bay, seen Spec 4s too, seller says they came from a now closed insignia manufacture in Jersey. Me? I think there unfinished types that did not receive their merrowed borders and are not specifically made as flat edges. Note the real thin yellow borders, if specifically made flat edge variant with a yellow border then edge will resemble the standard flat edge border of the period.

Let me see if I can find the Spec 4s like this.

Yes, I agree that these are unfinished Army green chevrons. Lately I have seen several Army green chevrons that were never finished. The Army green uniform use ended on January 1, 2015. Manufacturers are dumping existing stocks of completed and half-completed chevrons since they are no longer used.

I have a 2 5/8 inch wide Sergeant Major of the Army (eagle with two stars) cut edge chevron that falls into this category. This size was approved in 1996 and never would have been used in cut edge.

This brings up a question of value for Army green chevrons. The Army green uniform was used from 1958 through 2014. Think of how many millions of each rank were produced, especially in merrowed edge. In my opinion, the only Army green chevrons that have value are those with merrowed edge or of obsolete ranks (Specialists 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9). of those five, only the Spec 8 & 9 have any real value.

I don't believe any of the Army green chevrons will ever be worth more than $1.00 each because there are still millions of each rank out there.

The spec 4 ones have a much more substantial gold edge than the others ?

If these are unfinished - what does the finished version look like ?

And why are they done like this ?

Here are two chevrons illustrating the concept discussed above.

The chevron on the left is an original cut-edge staff sergeant produced from 1958 to about 1970 when the merrowed edge chevrons became popular. Note the edge is made of Army green thread. The chevron on the right is a merrowed-edge staff sergeant produced from the early 1970s through 2014.

The chevrons shown above with yellow borders were produced recently by not changing the thread spools to create the narrow cut-edge. They used to be Army green thread but it was easier just to use the same yellow thread as the stripes. This yellow border would then be covered over with the Army green thread used to merrow the edge. The yellow edge was never intended to be seen.

Thanks for the education on these chevrons. It proves that no matter how long you may have collected militaria, you can always learn something by reading this forum.
