What are these WW2 airmen wearing?

I was looking at some photos of flight crews from the 8th AAF and noticed something which looked odd to me. It looks like the men are wearing some sort of flip up sun shades attached to their goggles. Were these common and I have just missed them in other photos?

9th AF Recce 51 pilot with an RAF Type C helmet with taped in receivers and RAF Mk VII goggles with the sun shield taken off. Go to the Minnesota Air National Guard Museum and this exact helmet is on display.
