Retired Posted February 1, 2008 Share #83 Posted February 1, 2008 My 1943 Underwood M1A1 According to Bruce Canfield, all original M1A1 Carbines were made by Inland Division of General Motors. There were approximately 140,000 delivered to the U.S. Government. After WW II, most of the M1A1 Carbines were overhauled which means that a carbine from any of the prime manufacturers could be found in an M1A1 stock. However only an Inland Division carbine would be correct for the factory configuration. This information comes from the May 2004 edition of American Rifleman on Page 28. 517th Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #84 Posted February 1, 2008 Well spotted Retired,i was waiting for someone to reply, the original woodwork & stock was purchased without the barrel & action so i stripped my Underwood M1 carbine & fitted the metalwork into the M1A1. Note it has a late rear site fitted, have yet to fit the early flip type. Glad to see somebody reading the caption as well as looking at the pictures......517th Daniel G Harries 517th PRCT Ardennes/Rhine Crossing

Retired Posted February 1, 2008 Share #86 Posted February 1, 2008 Very nice collection which covers a wide field of interests. My particular interest is in patches;and was hoping to see the 501 and 506 jacket patches you showed alittle closer, especially the 501,have not seen that version. Thanks Mort 517th: I didn't want to rain on your parade regarding your M1A1 Carbine but I thought that you might want to know about it's originality. I noticed the late rear sight too, but didn't mention it. Your entire display is outstanding. Congratulations. Retired

mortaydc60 Posted February 2, 2008 Share #93 Posted February 2, 2008 Thanks for showing the patches. I thought that the first ones you showed were suspect;but did not want to embrass anyone or make a negative remark. It is also helpful to other collecters in what some copies look like and not go fishing for some non-existent variations. Thanks for posting. Morty
