What kind of flight suit is this?

It cannot be pre-1951.

US Navy had the Spec. -5390 (started with suffix S- , subsequently C-5390) in early 1951, so perhaps the earliest suits were issued in 1951 as well. Since there is no indication of any -5390A , most certainly the -5390B was the very first of the interesting -5390 family of Navy and Marines flight suits.

 

-5390B is the only among them having buttoned chest pockets.
