Abomb Posted September 14, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2015 Hello, I bought this leather baseball-style cap, among other things, from the estate of a man who was a B-17 waist gunner. I think it was a more connon item for ground crew. This example is of brown leather in six sections with a center button having a green twill lining and fold-out ear flaps. It is unmarked. A photo of ground crew with a similar hat can be found if you do an internet image search of "B-17 Schnozzle" . I do not personally dispute the era of the cap, but was it an issued item ? I do not know.
Nack Posted September 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2015 IMHO, a theater-made hat. Really cool.
Ronnie Posted September 14, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 14, 2015 Private purchase and I had one very similar that a Vet wore during the war as a member of the AAF. It was a very cool looking hat. Ronnie
phantomfixer Posted September 14, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2015 Looks like russet horsehide...cool hat, love the patina...private purchase item I would think...the AAF had the A-3 HBT baseball cap, B-1 summer cap, and the leather B-2 gunners cap...this could have been worn as a private purchase item... dmar836 Posted March 21, 2019 Share #7 Posted March 21, 2019 Old thread, I know but looks like the pic of the ground crew cleaning the bombardier's glazing is actually the A-3 with a frayed bill. Sorry for raising the dead. Dave
