Aloha members,

Here is another catch-all topic for the United States Naval Reserve forces - shore based, sea based and aloft. Feel free to add your examples of Naval Reserve units.

Once upon a time, there were many USNR afloat commands, destroyer flotillas, mine groups, escort squadrons, etc.

Now reservists are rotated and melded to active units instead of being entire ships companies.

Abbot continued her role as a training platform for prospective destroyer officers until April 1964. On the 14th, she departed Newport for Philadelphia for her last active duty assignment. At Philadelphia, she served as a Naval Reserve training ship for almost a year and as flagship for Reserve Destroyer Squadron 30. She was decommissioned on 26 March 1965 at Philadelphia and, for the next decade, was berthed with the Philadelphia Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

NAVY AIR TRANSPORT the Naval Air Reserve VR Squadrons
The post-WW-II Naval Air Reserve was organized 1 July 1946 with R4D VR mini-squadrons at some 25 of the over 50 initial Naval Air Reserve training sites. These VR aircraft were assigned to and maintained primarily by station active duty personnel with reservists training and flying some missions on the week-ends. With the transition of fleet VR squadrons to the R6Ds (C-118s) the Naval Air Reserve squadrons transitioned from R4Ds to R5Ds (C-54s) in the 1950s. With the termination of Navy MATS participation, C-118s became available and were assigned to the Naval Air Reserve starting in 1964.

This was supposedly a reserve unit now obsolete since probably 1983 when all UDTs were re-designated Seal Teams but I was never able to find any information on a UDT-121.

Yes, this was a reserve unit. Mid to late 70's. There was also a UDT 119 but I have not been able to find a patch.

Thanks for this information.

Reserve Anti-Submarine Squadron VS-931 Korean War 1951 - 1953

Operated off of the escort carriers USS SICILY (CVE-118) and USS BADOENG STRAIT (CVE-116)

post-2322-0-57121800-1490913247.jpg

VS-931 Antisubmarine Squadron was activated at Willow Grove Naval Air Station in Pennsylvania on March 1, 1951 during the Korean War and was transferred to Los Alamitos Naval Air Station in California. The squadron was sent abroad on the USS Sicily and operated near Japan and Okinawa. Upon transferring to the USS Badoeng Strait, the Squadron went to Korea on two different occasions to protect the US Naval fleet from enemy submarines. There were several transfers back and forth between the two ships and in addition the squadron was stationed on land bases at Atsugi and Itami for brief periods. The squadron returned to the States aboard the USS Sicily. Upon returning to Los Alamitos the squadron's designation was changed from VS-931 to VS-20
