Khe Sanh68 Posted September 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2015 I know sailors on board subs during the war had beards. Would anyone know if sailors were aloud to sport a beard on land and also on ships?
268th C.A. Posted September 7, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2015 I'm not 100% but I think while on sea duty it was ok. I remember as a kid before Vietnam sailors having beards, growing up in Norfolk, Virginia.
swmdo Posted September 7, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 7, 2015 We were allowed to have beards in the Navy until the early 1980's aboard ship. I miss that tradition. Sailors could have them ashore too. Not while stationed with Marine Corps.

swmdo Posted September 8, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 8, 2015 Wow and I thought the Navy was the only service that allowed beards and the Coast Guard. Learn something new from old string. Thanks Doyler.
doyler Posted September 8, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2015 Your most welcome. Im not sure what was allowed or just tolerated.... There were some Rangers and First Special Service Force members who sported some well groomed mustaches in the Italian Campaign
topdcnut Posted September 9, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 9, 2015 It has been my impression that forward deployed sailors in WW2 got away with much in terms of facial hair standards. I think this happened mostly in the Pacific, and is seen in the Sea Bee's, Subs and some surface vessels. As to the Coast Guard, they were part of the Navy, completely . And totally dictated by the command. Totally different from the facial hair standards in the 70's and early 80's In my opinion the Zumwalt hair standards kind of reflect by extention the antiquated shipboard fire fighting techniqes of the time. I know this is a hot button topic but honestly if you want to argue this point be ready to give us a full explanation as to the workings of a Flame Safety Lamp and you can keep your beard. Kadet Posted September 10, 2015 Share #10 Posted September 10, 2015 As far as I know, beards were authorized throughout the Navy up until the early 1980s.
