double canister Posted August 24, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2015 I bought this helmet last week because of its great condition. I'm interested to know what type, as that info is not listed on specs tag. Any help would be most appreciated.

northcoastaero Posted August 24, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 24, 2015 Could the helmet be a USAAF A-11A with the elastic band on the back instead of the leather strap with adjustable buckle? I don't have my flying clothing and equipment books near me at this time. Hope this helps.
doinworkinvans Posted August 24, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 24, 2015 Yea it is an early A11 without the snaps for the oxygen mask - most you see will have the snaps. littlebuddy Posted August 24, 2015 Share #12 Posted August 24, 2015 Is there a metal tab on the end of the chin strap ?
double canister Posted August 24, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted August 24, 2015 The male end of the leather strap is reinforced on sides with a metal V. Does that help, or do I need to get camera out?
littlebuddy Posted August 24, 2015 Share #14 Posted August 24, 2015 With the elastic nape strap at the rear of the helmet ,I think this is what's referred to as a early pattern A11 , the SPEC number conforms to the A11 ,which was standardised in 1943 I will contact my buddy who is a bit of a "guru" on helmets LB
Nigel.R Posted August 24, 2015 Share #15 Posted August 24, 2015 Its an early A-11A as deonted by the Elastic nape instead of the strap and buckle on the nape . The elastic would be used as the mod to " A11A" standard . Other than that its no different to a standard A-11. There's usually a red ink stamp stating "A-11A" usually just about the vicinity of the label on the chammy lining . A-11A's production ran concurrently with the normal production. and was an attempt to make production simpler . Awsesome lid wouldn't mind that myself .
