svenfromsweden Posted August 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2015 I share with you some photos of a Boeing B-17 bomber with an exotic and unusual camouflage. Does anyone know if this plane entered service and what the function of this painting? I count on your visit. http://aviacaoemfloripa.blogspot.com.br/2011/01/boeing-b-17-flying-fortress-spotted-cow.html Best Regards, Sven
Garandomatic Posted August 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2015 That's probably an assembly ship. They were painted in all manner of crazy patterns to get the squadrons formed up for a mission. THey were usually war weary planes, no longer suited for combat, and served on in this purpose. They would turn back after their job was complete, so they didn't fly them into combat. flyboy53 Posted August 23, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 23, 2015 Garandomatic said it all. Look for the book, "The Mighty 8th" and you will see this airplane in full color.

Also wonder what the Nazi pilots thought when they first saw these babies?> LOL!! They were "war Weary" and not combat birds. I believe there was only one that flew a combat mission and that was part of a maximum effort raid where everything that could fly went. It was a 24 with hand held guns. This was during a time when enemy fighters were not much of a threat anymore.
MattS Posted December 21, 2015 Share #8 Posted December 21, 2015 The excellent 384th BG website has two pages devoted to this aircraft. She was a B-17F delivered in June of 1943 and credited with 36 combat missions. http://384thbombgroup.com/pages/23441.html http://384thbombgroup.com/_content/_pages/One384thAircraft.php?AircraftKey=42-3441
