River Patrol Posted August 21, 2015 Author #26 Posted August 21, 2015 Really? .....that's some detective work to see white through the mess.......I'm thinking you guys were pulling at straws but I at least can see the laquer overlay turning yellow.....I was told by the grandson last night that the drips on the front are some type of glue that he himself spilled on the helmet while it was under a workbench in the garage......apparently there are other German items untouched, bayonets etc......I'm going back to buy them later......should be a nice haul but not something I collect. Thanks, Steve (...going to return the goof-off now)

Thanks, Steve (...going to return the goof-off now) Maybe so but that large area on the front does not look like a glue drip to me. I don't believe I have ever seen any glue that is white dry to white. All the chips on the top of the helmet appear to have some white around the edges. Ray
River Patrol Posted August 22, 2015 Author #28 Posted August 22, 2015 I did find a name is red chalk? or red pencil towards the back - OTIS - it's very small, hand written, very thin lines. Perhaps someone can look at this for me at MAX and give a hands-on assessment,,,..it might be different upon closer inspection. (Look for Blindbat Militaria or I'm known to be associated with Baystate Militaria) I hope this doesn't turn me into a helmet collector.....surely the wife will divorce me then. Thanks for everyone's help on this project. Steve
manayunkman Posted August 22, 2015 #29 Posted August 22, 2015 I fall in the corner of keep it as is. More than once I have bought weird painted Nazi helmets from vets who found them as is. Even with shellac on them. Good luck on the balance and maybe there is some American stuff too.
River Patrol Posted August 22, 2015 Author #30 Posted August 22, 2015 Thanks......I went for Vietnam items and was given this.....I think they were afraid I would be offended by Nazi items.
644td Posted August 23, 2015 #31 Posted August 23, 2015 A in person inspection is not a bad idea. The helmet is period done. The question is the helmet collecting fever. the fever runs high and the pockets deep in most cases not deep enough. The space...oh the lack of space... Desk, walls, cabinets, closets, make another shelf, where oh where can I put another helmet. Sorry that was my wife speaking.... Marty
