And one more. The figure under the cord appears to be a rat and is on both sides although they aren't the same does anybody know the significance could this be the year that the original owner was born in or is that just Chinese ? Is an original Hari-Kari ?

Yeah dad was a Corporal in a flame throwing unit he does not talk about it much but did say their job was to find the snipers and if they would not come out of their holes or caves in the rock the Marines had to stick the nozzle in the access and touch it off. We were talking about PTSD and these guys came home and dealt with it. Thank you to all you Veterans.

Very nice bring back and more so since it was your fathers.

You can find many types of animals or figures under the handle wrappings.Appears to be a very old blade and possible came down through generations of a Japanese family.

Thanks for posting.Post more of your fathers things if you have them

Beautiful knife. I always prefer the" been there done that" looking items. Is that sheath wood or metal? Also, does that latch lock the knife in the scabbard? Thanks for posting it.

Brodys Collection

That is an awesome piece, make sure it stays in the family because it is always sad when these things go across the auction block and lose there story.

Nice piece. These usually didn't have a lock. the little piece sticking out is a pick and would come out. Was your father on occupation duty? This is a civilian Tanto and usually would not be carried in a combat zone.
