Fred Borgmann Posted August 8, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2015 I have never seen anything like this. Just saw this in Whittier Alaska. Any ideas?

B229 Posted August 12, 2015 Share #7 Posted August 12, 2015 It's exactly what it says on the side of the caboose: the USCG Aux Station for Whittier, AK. http://cgauxwhittier.org/whittier%20flotilla%20history.html

willysmb44 Posted August 13, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2015 They must have gotten it about the same time the ARR got rid of most of their hacks (RR speak for 'caboose'). Some were scrapped, but most went to cabins and such:

Dave Posted August 14, 2015 Share #11 Posted August 14, 2015 Did they have a railroad spur on the CG station? My father in law commanded a base that had it's own railroad...just a thought...

The "station" is just the caboose. It's next to the harbor master's office in a parking lot in Whittier Harbor. It's across from the ARR's Whittier yard though, so it's not far from active rails.
