FSSF Guidon

Recommended Posts

Did the FSSF even use guidons? In all the photos of them on parade in Helena none are seen. In one photo of the disbandment ceremony one can be seen in the background and it looks dark in color, possibly blue.

Seller seems to sell a lot of "red and yellow" themed items....:D just sayin...

I recall years ago a guy had a guidon and it came through Manions.Reportedly FSSF.Recall it was dated 1942 on the QM tag and the arrows were not yellow. I saw it in Minneapolis once but dont recall the guidon color specifically.

No unit numbers would indicate it being unissued (at best) as the lister states

i would like to see a close up the material, sewing and the QM tag.

But really, a $2500 item and we get 2 photos? Gee thanks...

I put more photos in my listings for GI underwear.

The 1st SSF did have government manufactured guidons, but photographic evidence of their use is a problem. While I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the guidon on Ebay, it is made consistent with one that I have. Mine also does not have unit numbers. The arrows are white. Mine has a white oil skin tag inside the pole tube: "Sept.30,1944 (purple stamp); Phila. Quartermaster Depot; Inspected By; J Mc___ (purple stamp)". A picture of a guidon with regiment and company numbers can be found on page 76

in "THE SUPERCOMMANDOS", Robert Todd Ross, Schiffer Military History, 2000. I hope this helps.

This is the answer I got when I asked about the QM label.

I CAN'T GET FAR ENOUGH DOWN TO SEE THE DATE BUT PHILA. QUARTERMASTER DEPOT IS ON THE LABEL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST BUT NO MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE AS THERE IS NOTHING ELSE I CAN TELL YOU, THIS IS A LEGIT GUIDON. NOT A FAKE.

Now, I have not seen the latest generation of fakes that are flodding ebay right now, but I have not seen a fake with a QM tag sewn into the sleeve as of yet.

Jerry, you would probably know the answer to this. I wonder how hard it would be to find original blanks (nothing sewn to the red field) of these flags then sew on the unit device/number using original thread and bunting material?

I just find the fact that he is not willing to show the QM tag, or even discuss it, quite off putting.

I would think you could find the unissued blanks, but finding numbers or letters and matching up the age/wear and the thread would be difficult.

I though it odd just 2 pics too. even a partial photo (They are very hard to get at) that the tag is in there and to see the leather tabs would be helpful. The same color "accent" stitcthng was done on other guidons, namely the armored ones, where the WWI tank has all this detail that you just can't see.

Eric;

Yes, they are. Other little things are consistent such as the way the shoulder of the fletching rides up over the center seam, and the finishing of the edge seam at the base of the swallow tail. I would think that if someone was going to make a bang-up fake they would include the regiment and company numbers. I know that I would prefer them on mine, but I am happy with what I have.

Jim, Jerry

Thank you for the responses. I stand corrected. My initial impression may very well be wrong. This could be an original piece. It seems to be leaning that way. Still not sure it would be worth $2500 but who knows. I have never seen another one for sale.

Thanks again

It sure is seeming more and more that it could be original..

the question is: is it worth $2500? and if you get it and there is a problem how will the seller act?

also, who is to say that it's not an original guidon doctored with new FSSF insignia? it would be easy to do.

I've got some guidons, WW2 to current, more or less, and the construction of this one looks correct to me. Look at the top and bottom edge of the flag: there is no hemming on it. Only the swallow tail is folded over and sewn. I believe many of these were made of a roll of fabric that was the correct width, and only the pole and and swallow tail were sewn. That's pretty tough to fake, unless you have access to a mill that will produce fabric that is the correct width with sealed edges. The swallow tail is hemmed the normal way, and the pole sleeve looks normal too. I can't speak for the arrows, as I lack one of that type, but the flag itself looks real, and I don't see any evidence of another emblem being removed. So....use your best judgment...

I like guidon flags. They're my bag, baby.
