Sparty On Posted August 2, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 2, 2015 Actually I think it was a predecessor to VF-31. I think this was VF-6 that flew the Gruman Hellcat. Although I'm sure this could use more fact checking for verification.

pararaftanr2 Posted August 6, 2015 Share #6 Posted August 6, 2015 It is definitely VF-6 and you can tell by the windscreen that he is sitting in an F6F-5 Hellcat, so that narrows it down a bit.
Navybean Posted August 6, 2015 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2015 Could this not also be VF-3? They had Felix the Cat early then late again in WW2. VF-3 was the precursor of VF-31 They flew F-6F Hellcats in 1944-
pararaftanr2 Posted August 6, 2015 Share #8 Posted August 6, 2015 These pages from the VF-6 Squadron History should clear up any confusion. Note the similarity of the C.O.'s photo below to the OP's photo.
TBMflyer Posted August 6, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 6, 2015 I went thru the VF-6 section of the Air Group Six cruise book but couldn't find the aviator pictured. Perhaps he left the squadron after photos but before deployment on the Hancock. Mark
