Gary C Posted July 28, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2015 This is for hirsca that posted in the reference section, 1974 yellow M18. As a new member I can not make a post in that section, the reason for joining this group was to give an explanation of those markings. Anyhow.... Here's what I've got. Smoke and chemical grenades manufactured between 1960 and 1967 used these markings. Your grenade was manufactured by 201, Ordnance Products Inc - OPI, on their 5th line. 74 is the fiscal year of 1967 that begins in July of 1966 followed by a bi-month number beginning in July as well. So 74 is 1967 January/ February. The last set is the lot number. Do a Google search for... Mil Std 1168 Navy briefing: Old and new lot numbering. gigconcepts.com/files/MILSTD-1168.ppt On the power point doc scroll down to page 20 for further information. Hope this helps. hirsca Posted July 28, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 28, 2015 Gary--great info. Thanks much. I will look up that site. I thought that the 74 on my smoke grenade was for the fiscal year 1974.
Gary C Posted July 28, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 28, 2015 You're very welcome! Not easy info to find that's for sure... Can't even find it in old TM 1168 manuals for some reason. The ppt doc will explain further. By the way, if you wanna sell it.... It sure would look great next to my beater... Which by the way has strange colored greenish used for the markings, pretty cool, but again can't find any specs on this form of "camouflage" markings. Cheers! hirsca Posted July 28, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2015 Gary-I went to page 20 the site, but I can't make any sense out the content. Please interpret for me the stock numbers on your grenade and with what you told me about mine, then I might get to understand how the coding works. Sorry, but I no longer own the smoke grenade. And mostly--welcome to the forum! Al
Gary C Posted July 28, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 28, 2015 Mine is made by 201, OPI on their 3rd production line. 64 is 1966 January/ February. 1001 is the lot number. The first 3 numbers are the manufacturer The fourth is what production line is was made on. The fiveth number is the year. The sixth is which Bi-month it was made. The last four are the lot number. Let's say this is number on a smoke grenade. 1021-52-1003 By the old methodology the markings tell me... It was made at Pine Bluff Arsenal, 102 On their 1st production line. In 1965... In September/ October, 52 Lot number 1003. 2031-51-1002 The govt assigns letters to manufactures, but in this case they assigned them numbers... 203 And each factory had their production lines numbered... 1 The government starts their fiscal year on July 1st. So, on July 1st of 1964 it is now fiscal year 1965.... 51.... But it is actually 1964. Lot number 1002 Answer this question using the ppt doc.... 2043-72-2012

Lot number 1002 Answer this question using the ppt doc.... 2043-72-2012 OK, here goes: 204 is the manufacturer (I did not go back and look that up); the 3 stands for their 3rd production line; the 7 is for fiscal year 1967; the 2 stands for the second bi-months, September and October of 1966 and lot number 2012. How'd I do? Thanks for the great explanation. Al
Gary C Posted July 28, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted July 28, 2015 Excellent!!! It's a very confusing system, and happy they did keep this implemented. The current marking system is much easier! Gary
