New York National Guard c. 1912-1917 Cartridge Belt

Recommended Posts

US Victory Museum

New York National Guard cartridge belt. This was likely produced
between 1912 and 1917.

I know very little about these. All the ones that I have seen, and
this one that I own is not manufacturer marked. Construction is
crude and the belt grommets are not attached in a symmetrical manner
like the 1912 pistol belts produced by Mills or Russell.

The basic components may have been supplied in an unfinished state
and then Depot manufactured. The upper and lower rows of grommets
are used as rivets to attached the pouches to the belt. The quality
control is abysmal, as several of the New York state seal buttons
are attached upside down, and are incapable of being rotated into a
"normal" position.

Vic, all,

From what I have read, these belts were made for the NY Guard, not the NY National Guard. Once the NYNG were called into service, the NY Guard was raised to protect the sate's vitals and such.

Supposedly, these belts were made for these units in 1917.

Can anyone confirm or deny this version? I would like to know for certain...

Thanks,

TR

Yes, correct. New York State Guard, not National Guard. See Steve Dorsey's book on US Belts. It has an example. These are very scarce belts.

The Library of Congress uploaded a ton of photos to their website (and I think maybe they have an Instagram page?) which include a lot of Bain News Service images from around 1909-1916. I think there were some photos in there of a New York State Guard display circa 1916 that showed some of their equipment.
