Bluehawk Posted September 10, 2024 #501 Posted September 10, 2024 > A tribute - James Earl Jones (1931-2024) "The Hunt for Red October" (1990) Military service "He attended the University of Michigan, where he was initially a pre-med major. He joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and excelled. He felt comfortable within the structure of the military environment and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow cadets in the Pershing Rifles Drill Team and Scabbard and Blade Honor Society... With the war intensifying in Korea, Jones expected to be deployed as soon as he received his commission as a second lieutenant. While he waited for his orders, he worked on the stage crew and acted at the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee, Michigan. Jones was commissioned in mid-1953, after the Korean War's end, and reported to Fort Benning to attend the Infantry Officers Basic Course. He attended Ranger School and received his Ranger Tab. Jones was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 38th Regimental Combat Team. He was initially to report to Fort Leonard Wood, but his unit was instead sent to establish a cold-weather training command at the former Camp Hale near Leadville, Colorado. His battalion became a training unit in the rugged terrain of the Rocky Mountains. Jones was promoted to first lieutenant prior to his discharge."
patches Posted October 5, 2024 #502 Posted October 5, 2024 Jackie Gleason's Master Sergeant Maxwell Slaughter's Rack, We're seeing for the first time really of a clear view of it, I always thought he was a Pacific War Vet, but we see the EAME Ribbon, he wears the 24th Inf Div as a combat patch which must be then for Korea, no 2nd Award of the CIB, so maybe in Korea he already switched to the QM, he being some kinda Supply NCO or something remember.
godwulfAZ Posted October 6, 2024 #503 Posted October 6, 2024 They appear to have gotten Gen. Smedley Butler's ribbons right - also the medal display hanging on his wall - in the film 'Amsterdam' starring Robert DeNiro as Butler. And yes, he wore two MOH ribbons, since one was awarded by the Army and one by the Marine Corps. Not sure how current uniform regulations would deal with that in the unlikely event that an individual should receive MOHs from two services, but from what I can tell it was acceptable then.
godwulfAZ Posted October 6, 2024 #504 Posted October 6, 2024 This may have been noted before, but the badge that Viggo Mortensen hands Demi Moore at the end of SEAL training in 'G.I. Jane' does not exist in the real world. As I recall, her character is later seen in uniform wearing the right badge. As a sometime collector of movie memorabilia, this is one item I would really love to own.
easterneagle87 Posted November 6, 2024 #506 Posted November 6, 2024 Another great Hollywood rack. Yes, that's the late Teri Garr,,,and oh my. BUT.. John Lovitz has some impressive ribbons and medals displayed.

As a young ROTC cadet this movie taught me how to march properly and how to find my command voice when conducting drill and ceremonies be it parades or change of command in the future as a commander.
ksearl Posted February 26 #520 Posted February 26 The late David Graf in a Family Matters episode as an E5 Drill Sergeant. Name tag is not correct for US Army. Wonder if it said “Tackleberry”!
