Mystery WWII pistol belt

Most know about the M1961 pistol belt for the M-14 mag pouches, these have a series of dome snaps between the grommets. Some people have in their collections WWII pistol belts with the same modification but is a mystery as to its application. I have found a WWII photo of that belt in use by Commander Joseph Clifton aboard the USS Saratoga, April 1944. He is using it in the standard application as any pistol belt but at least some photographic evidence now exists.

Now keep in mind here this photo was taken in April 1944 so the idea this was an upgrade in 1945 goes bye bye!

Very true...That adds a whole new level of mystery to it!

And the other snaps seem to be backwards compared to the regular one !

Does not appear so, just different style snaps.

  • 3 weeks later...

They look reversed male commercial snaps. To me it's a private mod.

They're male snaps set in the belt facing inward, just like the standard one, they just don't have the dome over the end.
