Bigdogakabu Posted July 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2015 Hello all, Took a gamble and purchased this off EBay for not a lot of money. It came enclosed in a case with glass on both sides so pics were a bit difficult I wanted to put it to the experts - do you think this is the real deal? Bigdogakabu Posted July 15, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted July 15, 2015 It is inside a really nice frame and taking it out would be quite an undertaking. Let me know what you think and I will work on getting better pics through the glass.
*king* Posted July 16, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2015 Its missing some pieces and has been put back together but yeah I like it especially if you didn't pay a kings ransom for it.
Bigdogakabu Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted July 16, 2015 thank you. I figured even if it was a reproduction I still got a good deal with it inside the frame and all. However, not so sure the medal is a repro...hoping not at least.
stucky151 Posted July 16, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2015 I am no expert on these but for comparison, here are pics of the one at the National Marine Corps Museum.
patrick_usmc Posted July 16, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2015 By no means an expert on these, but isn't there supposed to be a star or something on the sleeve?
Longbranch Posted July 16, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 16, 2015 By no means an expert on these, but isn't there supposed to be a star or something on the sleeve? It looks like both examples posted have a star on the sleeve of the large outstretched hand. It looks like the OP's medal has a faintly legible star on the sleeve that can still be seen if you look close.
patrick_usmc Posted July 16, 2015 Share #8 Posted July 16, 2015 I was looking too far down the sleeve for it. I can see it now.
Schnicklfritz Posted July 18, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 18, 2015 Not sure on the medal itself, but the ribbon should be USMC weave HBT. According to history of the medal, the ribbon is suppose to be made of USMC HBT that was on Guadalcanal and washed in the Lunga River. The medal itself has been heavily reproduced over the years. castagain Posted Tuesday at 08:39 PM Share #10 Posted Tuesday at 08:39 PM Hello all, I'd appreciate opinions from Forum members regarding the authenticity of this George Medal. I'm not an expert on it. Thanks in advance, Donovan
