mvmhm Posted July 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2015 I just posted a group in the Recent Find section to a Captain who served in the 457th Fighter Squadron on Iwo Jima. His daughter said "his helmet" was in the box too...I was hoping it wasn't "his" helmet, and the collecting Gods didn't disappoint! He also sent home two rice bowls...so here they are:
mvmhm Posted July 15, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted July 15, 2015 I forgot to mention those tags are in both rice bowls....and the best piece of the group:
mvmhm Posted July 15, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 15, 2015 ...can't ask for better provenance than the tag he originally attached to the chin cords!
mvmhm Posted July 15, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted July 15, 2015 ...and the markings in the cover and the helmet....I was very happy to see the star was still intact on the cover too....luckily, Iwo Jima was the only place he ever went, so there's no doubt where it came from! mvmhm Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share #19 Posted July 16, 2015 I'm hoping some more things will surface as she continues to clean the garage, although that helmet would be hard to top, unless she comes in with Kuribayashi's sword! suwanneetrader Posted July 26, 2015 Share #21 Posted July 26, 2015 I hope it is OK to add some items. This rubberized Japanese ration bag with Japanese personal items contents are all my Dad got to bring home (except his Ka-Bar), other things were taken A Japanese sword when boarding ship at Guam after Iwo to return to the states and two disassembled guns when disembarking Hospital ship in California. sundance Posted July 26, 2015 Share #22 Posted July 26, 2015 That is one nice helmet. They're so hard to come by. I think I'd be over there volunteering to help clean that garage.
