Waltz41 Posted July 14, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 14, 2015 Saw this on a warbird forum, and popping up here and there on the internet. Lots of thoughts and also 'theories' of what went wrong and what led to this unfortunate debacle. On the flip side, they are making a movie of the USS Indaianapolis called Men of Honor....however, Nick Cage is the lead lol. https://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/catalina-destroyed-florida.html
Bob Hudson Posted July 14, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 14, 2015 It sounds like it broke up as they tried to lift it with a crane.
Waltz41 Posted July 15, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 15, 2015 yeah....lots of talk first WHY it got stuck in the water and 'beached' in the first place...then a lot of conversation about the salvage attempt and how they took it out of the water. Ashame really, seeing something like this happen....but the one good thing is no one was hurt.
Navybean Posted July 16, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2015 Darn shame, hate to see old birds die like that. I wonder what the owner is thinking right now.
Government Issue Posted July 17, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 17, 2015 but the one good thing is no one was hurt. Except my expectations, now that I know NICK CAGE will be in the film. Oh boy...
tthen Posted July 17, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 17, 2015 This plane was restored locally here in Puyallup Wa.. Went to see it on Fathers Day and heard about the movie. What a shame!!
V42 Posted September 25, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 25, 2015 It happens and when it's a vintage airplane, anything can go wrong. Sad to see and hear about it. It'll get fixed.
patches Posted February 14, 2016 Share #8 Posted February 14, 2016 Well the movie is set to be in theaters in a couple of months. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Indianapolis:_Men_of_Courage
mikie Posted May 15, 2016 Share #9 Posted May 15, 2016 My Dad used to tell us about volunteering to be a spotter flying in a PBY searching for Eddie Rickenbacker. He said that sitting in one of the side bubbles looking out on the ocean was one of his more enjoyable memories of the war.
sundance Posted May 15, 2016 Share #10 Posted May 15, 2016 That's sad. I hope they can rebuild it. PBYs look like planes designed by a committee. They are so (please excuse me) ugly they're beautiful.
Garandomatic Posted May 15, 2016 Share #11 Posted May 15, 2016 May 30 release... I sure hope it's good. At least one actor is a descendant of an Indianapolis man.
MWalsh Posted May 15, 2016 Share #12 Posted May 15, 2016 Nicholas Cage is in the movie. Great. I think I will just reread my books about it instead. I couldn't take him in Windtalkers when it came out... He stunk so bad in that movie that I had to shut off the DVD player and turn the thing back in. To this day I never have seen the last 3/4 of it. And yeah, too bad about the PBY.
manayunkman Posted May 15, 2016 Share #13 Posted May 15, 2016 I'll see the movie to honor the loss of the PBY. I kind of like Nick Cage. Ever see Match Stick Men ?
Garandomatic Posted May 15, 2016 Share #14 Posted May 15, 2016 I think there was more wrong with windtalkers than Nick cage!
David D Posted May 15, 2016 Share #15 Posted May 15, 2016 Looks like a pretty good movie from the trailers. Can't wait to see it.
Garandomatic Posted May 16, 2016 Share #16 Posted May 16, 2016 I didn't mind the trailer either... We'll see.
