This is an interesting thread on medical helmets. I only have one, and it has not outward indication that it was worn by some one in the medical branch. It is named to Frank K. Frankenfield of Evacuation Ambulance co #8. He was a mechanic and served a year overseas. I acquired his uniform a year ago, along with 2 diaries, 430 photos, 300 postcards and many other related document. This has turned into an interest in The United States Army Ambulance Service.

Wanted to bring this topic back up on the painted Medics helmets. With all of the intrest lately and comments on spray applied cross's and the uniformity, style and types/sizes of the painted cross's there are some good examples here to view.Starting with post #18 in this thread the cross's look sprayed to me.Viewing the whole 9 padges you can see a diverse style and quality of the red cross 's as well as how they were applied.

Another point that should be made on the WWI helmets, most shown here have been helmets of men from the Medical Corps, and that is different than the helmet of a Medic in the common use of the term. Many if not most of the men of the Medical Corps did not have any training in the treatment of wounds other than what any soldier would have, for example, in an Ambulance company there would be three important specialists, cooks, mechanics and wagoners, The Sanitary Train would have all the personnel found in a hospital as well as the support personnel. To be able to attribute any given helmet to a field Medic would require provenance that identified the owner and his type of service I got into a heated debate on another forum with someone who did not think that a cook should be allowed to wear the insignia of a medic, but in the records of Evacuation Ambulance Co #8, the personnel are listed in order of importance, starting with the Lieutenant, then Sergeants, Cooks, Mechanics, Wagoners and last Privates. Cooks, Mechanics and Wagoners were Pfcs) The cooks were the most important because they kept the men going, the mechanics were next important because they kept the cars going.

Here's one of my medic helmets which ended up being sold on the short lived Discovery reality show: Combat Cash. Below is a photo of it from the show. It is being worn by one of the reenactors. Anyone recognize the 3rd and 4th guys from the left in the front row? :)

Here are my examples my example 4 panel medic and my other with just one small cross on the front, there is alot of evidence that there were bigger crosses that were scraped off and replaced.post-162289-0-30749800-1458912943.jpegpost-162289-0-05386100-1458912951.jpeg
