cwnorma Posted July 12, 2015 Author #2 Posted July 12, 2015 "Tiffany" clasp? More like "Blancard" clasp William Link:
cwnorma Posted July 12, 2015 Author #3 Posted July 12, 2015 I. Scheuer was apparently a re-seller of Meyer-made wings:
LuftStalg1 Posted July 12, 2015 #5 Posted July 12, 2015 Love these old ads. Thanks for posting them! Mark D
rustywings Posted August 24, 2015 #8 Posted August 24, 2015 Chris, I wish I had some WWI aviation-related advertisements to add to your excellent concept for a thread. My fingers are crossed others will contribute...
cthomas Posted August 24, 2015 #9 Posted August 24, 2015 Here are two excerpts from Campbell's book on aviation badges & insignia
cthomas Posted August 24, 2015 #10 Posted August 24, 2015 Two more... These can be found in Terry Morris' excellent work on aviation insignia
trenchbuff Posted August 25, 2015 #11 Posted August 25, 2015 Fantastic reference material! Thanks guys!
mtnman Posted August 29, 2015 #12 Posted August 29, 2015 CANNOT be overstated, the historical value of this collection noting the companies involved, as well as the individual silversmiths adding their consummate skills to the field, in the manufacture of Military Aviation Insignia. WELL DONE GENTLEMEN, and any LADIES of our collecting community contributing as well.
gfryman Posted August 31, 2015 #13 Posted August 31, 2015 Great thread, will have to keep my eyes open for these ads, never thought to look for them!
cwnorma Posted September 5, 2015 Author #16 Posted September 5, 2015 Finally, here is a better scan of the Caldwell Advertisement for the Bombing Military Aviator Wing: J. E. Caldwell Bombing Military Aviator Wing Advertisement
cwnorma Posted September 5, 2015 Author #17 Posted September 5, 2015 ...and a better scan of the Dan Dunham Fighting Observer Wing: Dan S. Dunham, Fighting Observer Wing Advertisement
cwnorma Posted May 1, 2016 Author #18 Posted May 1, 2016 Recently sent to me by a friend: J.J. Sweeney Co of Houston, TX (Texas A&M, Yearbook, 1918)
rustywings Posted November 13, 2016 #19 Posted November 13, 2016 Any other WWI era U.S. Air Service related advertisements out there? Please feel free to post them here... (There's a wealth of research info in some of these old newspaper and magazine listings!)
cwnorma Posted February 4, 2017 Author #21 Posted February 4, 2017 Another apparent retailer of the "N.S, Meyer-type" wing. Brand-Chatillon was a 5th Avenue, New York retailer of high end luxury goods:
cwnorma Posted February 4, 2017 Author #22 Posted February 4, 2017 M.C. Lilley was a well-known manufacturer of military uniforms, insignia and society goods in Columbus, Ohio: Interestingly, it appears as though this insignia is the same as the one in the illustration. Perhaps we can now identify this well-made, handsome insignia as having been made by M.C. Lilley:
cwnorma Posted February 4, 2017 Author #23 Posted February 4, 2017 The MC Lilley post above got me thinking. I went into my box of "singles" and pulled out what I think appears to be a pretty good match to the insignia in this advertisement from William C. Link, of Newark, New Jersey;
cwnorma Posted February 4, 2017 Author #24 Posted February 4, 2017 Something of a mystery, the Bailey Banks and Biddle of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania marked insignia below does not appear to be a match for the insignia in their advertisement: Perhaps BB&B manufactured more than one style of Air Service insignia? Does anyone out there have an insignia that would be a better match? Chris
cwnorma Posted February 15, 2018 Author #25 Posted February 15, 2018 Interesting advertisement for "Bailey's." Wholesale only. Ask for Bailey's at Post Exchanges:
