Adam, those two USMC medals are incredible! I imagine it is going to be a loooong time before I have a chance to add to my collection!

Hello everyone!

An interesting thread, and many beautiful medals and groups have been featured. In my reply I'm going to lean more toward rare, but not necessarily high in monetary worth.

The Delaware state WW I service medal is a relative rarity among collectors of state issued service medals. Delaware, being a small state, offered a small amount of such commemorative medals. KIAs for WW I service are especially rare considering that Delaware suffered 270 fatalities during the war. All of these medals were made of sterling, so many suffered the fate of the scrap pot. My first one was from a jeweler who offered it to me for a little more than scrap value. The best $8.00 I ever spent, I've been "hooked" ever since!

I'm very fortunate to be the current caretaker of quite a few of these beautiful medals, including a DE USMC group and two KIAs. The one featured here is a very early one that was issued to an honored fallen Veteran, who was KIA in France on 26 Sept 1918. These medals were issued in the order issued, the low numbers, as far as I know, reserved for the KIAs.

Even rarer are the DE State SAW service medal and the WW I city of Newport WW I service medals, both of which have eluded me for 5 decades of collecting. Maybe someday!

My best wishes to all!

Joe

Thank you Joe for posting your Delaware medal and the great information. I learned a lot. As I suspected my Delaware medal has a replacement ribbon. I was just happy to get a Delaware medal. I never looked at it close enough to realize it was numbered and it was named. I just put in my collection. Considering 9,187 is the estimated number issued, 1246 is kind of on the low side. It isn't #49 though, Outstanding medal Joe.

Issued to R.B. Donovan. I'd be most appreciative of any information on Mr. R.B. Donovan from Delaware.

You never know what you'll find on the Forum.

If one didn't know better, which I didn't, not a bad replacement. I doesn't look like any WW1 brooch I'd ever seen before, but considering my DC medal in the box with a lapel pin has a safety pin sewn to it as a brooch who's to say?

I got this from a friend I really respect and appreciate. I've gotten some really great stuff and info over the years from him. Thanks Alan.

I added the patch.

Another VA State medal I don't have is Newport News, 1,467 issued. The only State Medal I don't have that I know of is Wyoming

Here is one of my prizes!

I bought this group out of a newspaper classified way before the Internet.

Numbered PH #836.

I have five or six pages of original discharges and re-up documents as well. The interesting thing is none of his papers have anything about wounds, in fact it may be stated on his post WWI discharge "not wounded".

I think this is a Meritorious Service award, but I need to do my homework!

Another one that has been on my wish list for many years before I stumbled on it in a junk shop only a quarter mile from where I grew up!

The Washington Artillery War Service Medal. I planned on doing a write-up on it, but, as the WA's archives were stored at Jackson Barracks in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, I'm not very confident that any documents relavent to the creation and issue of this medal have survived.

The U.S. Naval Academy Short Range Battle Practice medal. They were awarded from 1935 until 1943. 500-600 were issued.

This example is from the first contract of 100 medals. The first ones had the hallmark at the top of the medal.

One more.

This is a Ninth Ward Victory Medal, WWI.

There is a large stone arch, beautifully carved, with four large bronze rectangular plaques naming all the recipients. I have a list, in fact, it might be available on the Internet. As I remember, there were somewhere around 1,100 recipients.

Since this part of New Orleans is prone to flooding, not many have survived. As a lifelong collector from N.O., I have talked to other collectors in the area, and know of only maybe 5 or 6 out there. The brooch is one of those window types where a slip of paper is inserted. I had to remove it when I re ribboned it some time back, when I find it I will add an image.

Nice SRBP Medal! I was chasing one of these that came out of the woodwork in Pensacola some time back, but, alas,.........

Thanks! I'd been looking for one of these for a while when this one became available. It's part of a group to a USNA grad from the class of 1940.
