Interesting Early American Button

Recommended Posts

Found this little button, if that's even what it is, in a box of assorted military items from all time periods. I've posted it under Revolutionary War, but don't really know what time period it could be from. It's about 5/8" diameter, looks to b made of iron and depicts an eagle clutching a cannon. The shank is flat and has no hole in it so not sure what or how it was used. Anyone have any idea about this piece?

Maybe Colonial, Maybe Mexican from the Mexican- American War? or maybe not American at all. Just looking for a little enlightenment, that's all.

Thanks for solving the mystery dag. Somehow ended up in a box of early US items, Civil War and earlier. Mods may decide to remove since it turned out to be French.
