phantomfixer Posted July 7, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 7, 2015 Looks like a APH-5 flight helmet used throughout the 60s....was it refurbished? is the interior as clean as the exterior? Nice

northcoastaero Posted July 7, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 7, 2015 The helmet appears to be a U.S. Army APH-5A with a plastic visor housing, plastic visor tracks, and thin rubber black edge beading. I had a page from a Gentex or Sierra catalog years ago that stated that these differences made the helmet an APH-5A. Probably from 1967 at the latest. The olive drab versions were introduced in 1967. Many of he earlier white painted helmets were re-painted olive drab. The manufacturers sticker could be behind the right ear cup. It is possible that foreign military/civilian APH-5A helmets were manufactured in white after 1967? Just noticed that the helmet grommets for the ear cup retaining cords seem to have white paint on them and the visor tracks appear to be green or black? Possible refurbished helmet as phantomfixer stated. Could even be an olive drab helmet repainted white? Also, the visor lock knob is olive drab and may have been white on the late manufactured white painted helmets. The olive drab tapered visor lock knob with silver hardware (not the later black) that is on the helmet was introduced by 1967
usaf70 Posted July 7, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 7, 2015 Thanks for the info. Are these type helmets worth much and what would be a telltale sign Army and not USAF?
northcoastaero Posted July 8, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 8, 2015 The US Army used the APH-5 (not to be confused with the USN/USMC APH-5) in helicopters and the OV-1 Mohawk aircraft. The USAF used the HGU-2A/P modified with a boom microphone in helicopters. Both the Army and USAF used the similar looking AFH-1 Aircrew Fragmentation Helmet in helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. If your APH-5A is complete, has not been repainted, and is in really nice condition, I would say it is worth between $250.00-$350.00.
usaf70 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted July 8, 2015 Here is the inside of the helmet in question. Is there anything missing or a telltale sign of it being an APH-5? Thanks
usaf70 Posted July 9, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted July 9, 2015 Any comments on the inside of the helmet as to everything being there or something missing? Thanks
phantomfixer Posted July 9, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 9, 2015 Circular leather sizing pad on top, and rear/nape area leather sizing pad...nape strap looks wrong..should be white..or darker OD...I could be wrong on that, but white helmet= white nape strap, if factory original???
