nice! WWII chambrey shirts are hard to find! I see you have the victory model shoulder holster with ammo loops that is another scarce piece to find.I had recently found some vintage ammo to put into mine and looks much better displayed that way.I have seen alot of photos with pilots wearing thier shoulder holster over their life vest. One thing about those MK-1's is that they do not seem to display well for one it covers up all the accessories one might put on a mannequin.Who is the manufacturer of your vest and contract number? if you don't mind.

this is an old picture of my late war usn aviator.I chose the late war so I could put more stuff on him!

OK last one! I had to add one with the life preserver light taken in feb. 1945

Note the fella middle row on wall and back row front is wearing his shoulder holster of life vest and radio set headband over flight helmet.

also fella front row is wearing the early M-450 flight helmet and all the rest the AN-H-15 he also wears two of the three styles of dye marker packets.

they all are using the A-14 oxygen masks

Is that A-14 oxygen mask army air force or bureau of aeronautic contracted?

Charlie Flick
this is a good representative of a late war naval aviator

Hey Dustin:

That is a neat photo indeed. You might be interested to know who the pilot was. He was Lt. JG Lyndon D. Harris USNR. The pic is an official US Navy photo. My copy of it is dated 7-17-45. The photo caption on the back reads: "Lt. JG Lyndon D. Harris of Chicago, Ill., steps into the cockpit of his Wildcat fighter aboard an escort carrier in the Pacific. He recently shot down a twin-engine bomber near Okinawa."

Here is another nice color shot of the Mk-1 vest in use by a group of naval aviators in training. I believe this is an official US Navy photo as well

Jerry:

You have a very handsome display. Congratulations! It must be very difficult to collect USN aviation items in Poland. It is plenty hard in the USA, so it must be ten times as hard there.

On the ammunition issue for the Victory Model, the sewn loops were added by the parachute loft riggers on the ship. They had the heavy duty sewing machines that were capable of sewing the cotton webbing to the leather straps of the M3 style holsters.

You should also be aware that Naval Aviators, particularly late in the war, had other options for ammunition carriage. The USN adopted a small fold up belt pouch which carried 6 rounds of .38 Special ammo. Although I have collected and studied the Victory Model revolver for many years I have never discovered the proper nomenclature for that pouch or the identity of the maker.

The other option for ammo carriage was the use of the belt mounted first aid kit pouch. The Bureau of Ordnance Catalog of Navy Material listed the "POUCH, 1st aid packet (used with the revolver as ammunition carrier.)" This was published July, 1945.

So, if you want some other options for your display you might want to try the aforementioned pouches. Keep up the good work!

Regards,

Charlie Flick

Good morning... :) WOW... Dustin. nice pk1 and m592 kit... My m592 now is empty ... I have all contents list in M.Breuninger survival book.. maybe in future I will try catch everythink (this is hard to find I think)

The a14 mask is with AAF stamp and date is 4/44 but it have NAF mic. with red USN stamp on plug and small NAF stamp on cable. Do you have in your collection all NAF a14 mask produced for Navy pilot... supposedly it is rare like hell???

Thanks Charlie for info... I will try buy ammo in Europe maybe on some show....I decided to have one .38holster clear without belt loops ( I find copy sewn/made a belt loops in sleeve style easy to remove not sewn to strap only for display) and another .38 holster is on second photo with orginal sewn belt loops... really nice piece with all snaps works. Yes you have right!!!! In Poland It is very hard... I can only buy some stuff on Ebay or in shop... you have all in place... military show , plane , veterans , everythink.I would like to live in USA:)

Take care,

The last complete PK-1 one ebay was a late 1940's packing there are about three variations in packing from early to late. The early version included the boxed MK-4 had projector/very shells and AN-R-2 life raft repair kit later they changed to a kinda waterproofed cheese cloth material to wrap hand projector/very shells and added new style of repair kit in same material. In 1946 the buaer did a review and found that about 85% of downed airman spent less than 24 hours in the water until rescue.they then went through a whole reorganziation of components for all loife rafts and kits in service with many deletions the deletions are as follows for the PK-1 this being the third variant:

repair kit, desalting kit (replaced by MK-2 solar still),two sets of leak plugs, safety pins & matches, two cans of rations ,projector kit and survival booklet

The projector kit was actually replaced by two MK-13 MOD-0day/night distress signal.

This is a phto from march 1945 showing layout of components

I bought one of my PK-1 cases empty and the other with just raft and pieced it together. They are yellow! all navy raft cases presceding the Pk-1 are grey I suspect yellow on the PK-1 since yellow is the primary color for rescue item's

here is a shot of the front and back.

the Pk-1 was first contracted in january 1945 and deliveries were being made in late april 1945

in case you are confused what "permuttit" is that is the desalting kit made by a company named permuttit

Jerry i was looking at your photos again and noticed the life vest pictured here has the added pockets between bladders a fairly rare variation on USN life vests, refer to my post on pneumatic life preservers in field equipment I talk about that variation.

It have cut donw strap and sewn strap for another vest and hoses have small rip...
