Khe Sanh68 Posted June 27, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2015 I found this badge at a local flea market on vacation. Badge is marked with Security Police on the front. Back of the badge is marked U.S. Govt. Property. It appears to have a hanger on it for a pocket. Was wondering if this is a 1960's badge?

flyboy53 Posted June 27, 2015 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2015 U.S. Government issued badges (with the identifier on the back) were issued until the late 1970s -- at least I had one, and judging from the plastic button mount, which were purchased (when I was in) at the BX troop exchange at Lackland -- I would guess the badge is from the late 70s and early 80s. A 60s era badge most likely would be marked "Air Police." The plastic mounts were worn behind the shirt pocket buttons on OD green cotton and permanent press fatigues. We would sew OD fatigue buttons on MA-1 flight jackets to attach this badge or, as the Air Force would transition to subdued insignia, sew a subdued badge on the fatigue uniforms because the badges -- for the security specialists would eventually get really beaten up. What I find amazing about these badges showing up at flea markets or other venues, is that they were controlled items, issued on a hand receipt and returnable when you left the career field or separated from the service. COOKIEMAN Posted June 28, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 28, 2015 What is the serial number at the bottom of the badge? It should be a letter and four numbers. Sometimes this can be used to date the badge.
firefighter Posted June 28, 2015 Share #6 Posted June 28, 2015 I agree. 70s-80s era badge. They were using the plastic holders when I was in, 82-86.Is the bar marked 'Government Property'.If so it's an older 70's issue. If not late 70s-80s issue.
