Custermen Posted June 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2015 I wanted to identify this DUI pin. According to the family, the following info is known about this soldier. (1) Engineer unit (2) Service in Italian Campaign, WW2 Based upon my info, (3) DUI was likely attached to the US 5th Army or possibly a corps. Note the SSI. This DUI Pin does not match any Engineer Battalion that was part of any of these organizations: 3 Infantry Division, 85 ID, 88 ID, 91 ID, 92 ID or 1st Armored Division. There were many engineer or similar units attached to the 5th Army such as topographical engineers, general service, pontoon engineers and others. Can anyone identify this DUI? Custermen Posted June 19, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted June 19, 2015 I will ask if he can re-scan the photo. Some people don't have the capability to do that. In my opinion, this doesn't look like the image in the link for the 531 Engr Shore Batln. That DUI has wavy lines where as the one in my photo appears to be a straight diagonal bar with one symbol on each side of the bar.
Custermen Posted June 19, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted June 19, 2015 I think it looks something like this one ---but this is an Ordnance DUI and a modern version. http://www.acuarmy.com/army-3rd-ordnance-battalion-unit-crest-service-not-glory-p-27492.html
tredhed2 Posted June 19, 2015 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2015 The DI is for the 175th Engr Regt (General Service) which was attached to US 5th Army at least by 15 Aug 44 if not earlier.

Custermen Posted June 20, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted June 20, 2015 Thanks. I haven't found a link that shows the DUI pin. But somewhere I have a list of the various units associated the DUI motto's. Somewhere. This will help the family.
tredhed2 Posted June 21, 2015 Share #11 Posted June 21, 2015 Umm....it's not all on the web. The info is contained in Capistrano's series of DI catalogs.
