Navy Rating CONFUSION! Blue on Green Turret Captain?

Rating, rank, left arm, right arm, topside, bottom side, mark, specialty, black is blue, green is gray. Who's Liona and why is she every sailor's favorite girl ?

My uncle did escort duty during the war on a destroyer and my brother in law was career Navy. I've shot with SEALs, had dinner with a Captain and puked on board the Gettysburg scattering a bunch of enlisted men in their dress whites. Each and every one of them tried to explain the Navy rank/rating structure to me but I'm just too dense to get it.

So, short story long, I got this really cool Navy patch the other day. It's a blue on green, Chief Petty Officer Turret Captain. It looks green to me but my wife sez I'm color blind and it's dark gray. From what I can find it's for the winter aviation forrest green uniform. It's a right arm patch and because Liona was nice enough to autograph it, WW2 vintage. This rating, turret captain was used up until 1948.

So would you fine gentlemen in Poseidon's service take pity on an old flat foot and set me straight on this patch. Am I even close in my assertions?

Many Thanks!

Your wife is right its gray. It was made for wear on the short lived gray cpo uniform 1943/44. It is a chief turret captain and for wear on the right arm. Liona is the makers mark for Lion Brothers of Baltimore MD who made rates during both world wars.

Also, looks to be cotton. The Gray uniform was cotton, while the Aviation Working Green uniform was wool. If this was indeed green, it would be made of wool.
