45ACP Posted April 15, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2015 Hey guys how do you remove rust from guns.
jeff arthur Posted April 15, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2015 Slowly & carefully ! Try G-96 or any commercial gun oil first, you want to keep as much of the original finish as you possibly can, before more aggressive measures are taken...Regards, Jeff
72psb Posted April 15, 2015 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2015 Lots and lots of gun oil and 0000 steel wool.Very light pressure, let the oil lift the rust.
ArtyScout Posted April 15, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2015 You should try some bore cleaner with a dry green scrub pad. I think the 0000 steel wool might be a little too abrasive. Once the rust comes off, wipe off the bore cleaner with a soft cotton cloth and put on the gun oil or 3in1 oil. Wipe off the excess oil but leave a light film of oil on the weapon. There should always be a very light film of oil on the exterior of your weapon, this will protect your weapon from rust until its next cleaning. Never leave a weapon completely dry, and remember if its a 'museum' piece to always wear gloves when handling it. I hope this helps. Semper Fi. jawasinger Posted April 15, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 15, 2015 I agree with the bore cleaner or gun oil depending on how bad the rust is but after the rust is gone dont leave it to oily it will only collect dust and moister which will start the cycle all over again
doyler Posted April 15, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2015 Once free of rust you can also coat with a light film of Rennaissance Wax.THis will protect the finnish and also not be a wet film or coating. You can find it on the webb and read about it. I have also used a spray product called Metal Sealer by Gunslick. Its a multi purpose product.Disperses moisture, prevents rust and is a lubricant as well
Terry K. Posted April 15, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 15, 2015 I have some but can't remember the name but there is a magnesium type pad (looks like steel wool) you can get will remove rust and not remove blue or scratch the piece. I use it on everything and works great. It can be ordered on line. If I find the package, I'll post the name. You will not be disappointed. phantomfixer Posted April 15, 2015 Share #9 Posted April 15, 2015 I've used gun oil and the brass 12 G bore brush...the brass, at least I think they are brass, bristles don't seem to harm the finish, and it takes the rust off...then I oil again and keep it oiled... BROBS Posted April 15, 2015 Share #10 Posted April 15, 2015 0000 steel wool is safe to use if you are VERY careful and know the proper way. you cannot let ANY rust dust build up or get in it or it will scratch. I want to try that frontier stuff that Terry posted. -Brian

Linedoggie Posted April 15, 2015 Share #12 Posted April 15, 2015 Hey guys how do you remove rust from guns. #1 NO Steel wool. Steel wool will bite into the finish be it blueing or parkerizing. Use Bronze wool #2 Use Kroil and liberally soak part overnight, let it get into/under the rust and lift it #3 Go Slowly, patience in all things
BROBS Posted April 15, 2015 Share #13 Posted April 15, 2015 #1 NO Steel wool. Steel wool will bite into the finish be it blueing or parkerizing. Use Bronze wool only true if you use it dry. use bronze wool with oil or cleaner and it will remove the rust but leave bronze residue all over. With 0000 steel wool I use blue wonder: http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/444070/blue-wonder-gun-cleaner-and-bore-cleaning-solvent-4-oz-tube?cm_vc=ProductFinding it really does work as advertised and I have done a few pieces this way. You just have to be careful because if you go too rough it can thin the finish. I use a brass brush first to get down into the pits and everything and remove all rust.. then the 0000 steel wool to remove the brass residue. All with the blue magic. I haven't found kroil to be a good rust remover at all.. but a great creeper and preservative. don't get it on wood though. for general oil that's pretty much safe for everything I use Ballistol. -Brian
Svensson Posted April 15, 2015 Share #14 Posted April 15, 2015 I have had good experiences with many different kinds of penetrating oil for removing and loosening rust. If you are going to use steel wool or any sort of abrasive, use a very light touch.
BROBS Posted April 15, 2015 Share #15 Posted April 15, 2015 honestly with a question like this I think every single one of us could chime in with a different method. it all boils down to the item, how bad it really is, and what a person is comfortable with. -Brian
MWalsh Posted April 15, 2015 Share #16 Posted April 15, 2015 I have some but can't remember the name but there is a magnesium type pad (looks like steel wool) you can get will remove rust and not remove blue or scratch the piece. I use it on everything and works great. It can be ordered on line. If I find the package, I'll post the name. You will not be disappointed. You might be referring to a scrubber / pad / item called Big 45 possibly? It looks like a wad of steel wool but if memory serves me right it is stainless steel maybe? Removes rust and will not score or harm gun blue.
BROBS Posted April 15, 2015 Share #17 Posted April 15, 2015 yup he linked to it later.. and it is the "big 45". I want to try some of that stuff... I think I'll order some. just an FYI for you guys it's cheapest direct from the maker. $6 per pad with shipping included... the ebay auction is nearly $8 per pad. -Brian
