Steindaddie Posted July 25, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2008 Here is a batch of photos I stumbled across taken at Clinton Sherman AFB and Carswell AFB back in 1958 and 1959. What a great era to go to the base open house ! Here are a few B-47's - still the main bomber of that time. Lee Ragan Posted July 25, 2008 Share #13 Posted July 25, 2008 Neat pictures! I remember going to airshows in the early 60's when many of these aircraft were still in the inventory. It added to the spark for me to join the Air Force after high school. Even as late as 1966, many USAF planes still were wearing the natural metal finish. At one time, I had a big stash of photos similar to these taken at airshowns between 1961 and 1965, but they have all been lost somehow. Thanks for sharing these, they are GREAT! Steindaddie Posted July 25, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted July 25, 2008 Glad the photos are well recieved ! These pics date from the time when, in my opinion, the USAF was at it's zenith. Brand new bases had just opened, there were a couple thousand bombers & many times that in fighters and the sky was the limit, so to speak. But 1958-1959 marked the start of the ending of an era as well. Among other factors, inanimate missiles were just about to start replacing most of the bombers, and with that manned threat diminished, the need for thousands of interceptors was gone, along with the bases that supported them all. (I'll probably get an earful from the missilemen for that, if they are awake )
