DaddyDog Posted September 7, 2015 Share #36 Posted September 7, 2015 Where would this one fit in for a manufacture timeline? RS SB with sewn straps, stamp looks like "1 20C" with the top of the number toward the rim.

WW2JAKE Posted September 7, 2015 Author Share #39 Posted September 7, 2015 I used a little chalk to bring out the numbers but can't see anything with my loupe. I don't know, I still see it in the first picture... but regardless I think it's either a mccord or if that is actually an S I see (the bales look like schlueter bales in your pictures) they both had a few odd lot numbers in the ww2 production runs, I'm on mobile right now so I don't have my list but Grant G should have 1 or 2 on his list that are a bit odd if he wouldn't mind sharing that
Grant G. Posted September 7, 2015 Share #40 Posted September 7, 2015 Where would this one fit in for a manufacture timeline? RS SB with sewn straps, stamp looks like "1 20C" with the top of the number toward the rim. Your helmet has a very faint/missing 2nd digit (the missing number could be anything from a 0-3). It is a McCord manufactured helmet due to the "C" suffix (of the confirmed Schlueters I have seen they all either had "A" or "B" suffixes) and oval spot welds (Schlueter's were circular). Your helmet has a manganese rim, rear seam, and a heat stamp of 1_20C, which dates the helmet's production to anywhere from September 1944 to June 1945. Grant G. Posted December 5, 2015 Share #43 Posted December 5, 2015 Agreed, very early war McCords often had an additional number following the letter suffix.

It is the first time I see an additionnel number following the letter suffix. Did you ever see one ? its not overly common but certainly not unheard of. heres some posts about some http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/208353-odd-heat-stamp-in-early-mccord-shell/ http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/206745-salty-early-fixed-bail-made-in-1941/

usmc grunt Posted December 12, 2015 Share #47 Posted December 12, 2015 Three digit heat stamps on rear seam M-1 helmets that begin with 4, 5, 6 or 7 indicate the manufacturer as R.J. Stampings of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. These helmets are typically fitted with the post Vietnam cotton / nylon chinstrap that has a chin cup and attaches to the bales with removable clips. These are the only helmets that were shipped with combination duct tape / Styrofoam padding located near the bales (see photo). If you have an M-1 helmet with a 3 digit heat stamp and a white residue located near each bail, you have an R.J. Stampings helmet. Actual heat stamps found on R.J. Stampings helmets include 404, 501, 502, 503, 504, 507, 531, 541, 601, 602, 603, 608, 609, 623, 626, 629, 608, 609, 632, 635, 692, 693, 701, 702, 723, 734 Hi WW2JAKE, thanks for your help, is my first time using Tapatalk, I'm trying to upload some more but are too big, I'll try later on so my question is the next one, Are 3 digits number US army issue or a foreign manufacturer? usmc grunt Posted December 12, 2015 Share #49 Posted December 12, 2015 do you have any documentation supporting this? not disagreeing, just would like solid proof I have 2 boxes of US M-1 helmets. The boxes, which had never been opened, contained 4 stacks of 5 helmets in NOS / unissued condition. The helmets were in their original packing material - a waffle pad was sandwiched between each helmet and several sheets of paper padding were on top of each stack. The boxes are stamped with the correct NSN, 8470-00-255-8579 and the Defense Logistics Agency contract number, DLA 100-81-C-3489 indicates that they were manufactured under a US government defense contract in fiscal year 1981. The box also has a stamp that reads "/82". This is the date that the box was shipped from the contractor. The year "82" has been lined out and replaced with s a handwritten month and date of "3/83" indicating that the boxes were shipped from the contractor to the Defense Logistics Agency in March 1983. I cut the original tape that sealed the boxes, removed the helmets and documented the heat stamp number on each of these helmets. All 40 of these unissued helmets, right out of their unopened boxes, were stamped with one of the 3 digit numbers listed in my previous message. The last corporation to receive a government contract for the US M-1 helmet was R.J. Stampings.
