WW2 PARACHUTE VERY SMALL ? SWITLIK

Hello

what are your thoughts on this parachute

I have no knowledge of these things. It is dated 1944

measures about 32 inches across

my guess is that it is for a flare possibly one in an aircraft bailout stuff? that assumption comes with the knowledge that Switlik still makes life rafts and rescue gear to this day

It's a pilot parachute used to pull the main parachute out of its packtray. Used in aircrew emergency parachutes and paratroopers reserve parachutes.

Exactly what Rolf said - it's a pilot chute. Its missing the large internal spring that would launch it out of the pack upon pulling the ripcord. The 046208 was the most common pilot chute used throughout the war, and with little modification was used for another 40 years.

was the A-3 pilot chute the replacement? followed by the MA-1 pilot chute?...think the MA-1 is still used today in the BA18 and 22

Notice there is no hole at the top of the pilot parachute. The apex vent was used to reduce oscillation and stabilize the jumper during descent. They are not needed on a pilot parachute thus were eliminated in later versions.
