M1911 magazine pouch collection

Hi,

I am busy right now trying to collect every type of mag pouch for the M1911 and M1911A1 pistol from the beginning until 1945. The aim is to put them on display together with my pistols.

So far I have:

Top row: eagle snap leather pouch (1913), garrison leather pouch (1922), M-1918 pouch (1918), M-1912 pouch (1918)

Bottom row: M-1923 USMC pouch (1943), M-1923 pouch (1942), M-1912 British Made (1943)

I’ve seen that there exists an M-1912 canvas army eagle snap pouch. Unfortunately I’ve never come across one for sale in Europe (or at a reasonable price on the internet).

Are there any other types of pouches used to carry .45 mags that I am still missing to complete my collection?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Dan

You are missing a pouch that were produced pre WWI. They where pea green canvas with eagle snaps. Also a post WWII green pouch made.in the 1950's. But besides that nice collection !

Hi Dan !

as an addicted to these .45 mag pouches I love any guy who...loves them. But be careful... when you say "every type of mag pouch" you walk on an immense land... In over 40 years of collecting them I put together near 150 of them with about 75 variations... Yes, 75, counting all types, all makers and - just for the WWI types - even the month...

I agree with what has been said by the guys above: you should need a nice Eagle button pouch (1st variation, transitional, 2nd variation?) to have a nice selection. But if you want to go more in deep, well, then start hunting for the less common ones or the rarest ones... What about the USMC Phila Depot made ones, or the double duty (.45 and M1 Carbine mag) expressely made for the Marines by Froehlich and by Boyt in various shapes? And what about the quite rare M.E.Co. 1943 British made, with British round buttons?

And this is just the beginning...

Here a few examples of the less common ones... A transitional 1913 (rimmed Eagle but still central stitiching), a 1917 Eagle button (the very last made), an elusive USMC PHILA DEPOT, a couple of double duty Froehlich and Boyt (1st type), a Boyt 2nd type and a British with round buttons...

Good hunting!

Fausto

Absolutely beautiful specimens posted!

Eventually you will want/need all of the appropriate belts and holsters too. Addicting but rewarding.

Thanks a lot Fausto for your excellent and very interesting reply. You just made me realize in what kind of endeavor that I put myself in :)

Even though I did not intend to hunt for specific dates or producers, the challenge is still quite bigger than I imagined.

Concerning the eagle snap pouches, do they only exist with US Army snaps or also USMC etc?

Thank you,

Dan

world war I nerd

For what it's worth, somewhere on this forum there is a thread showing an unissued or nearly unissued 1911 magazine pouch that is forest green in color and bears USMC snaps.

Hi !

Here a picture of a USMC snap pouch... Unfortunately is not mine, just stolen on the net or maybe here on the Forum. The picture of the USMC button is not from the same pouch, but maybe from a cartridge belt ...

Oh, by the way I forgot to specify that all the pouches I posted are from my collection but the M.E.Co. 1943 with round buttons. Those two nice girls are from the collection of our fellow member Johan Willaert...

And just for fun here the oldest Eagle snap I have so far observed: dated 1912... It is in the collection of my friend Johnny Peppers... And not bad the two loop magazines...

And let us not forget the 1941 dated R.M.Co. made for the Marines.

Yery nice pouch though your pouch isn't a Marine pouch.

These unmarked R.M. Co. field gear items were lend lease to Russia pre or early WWII. I have a mint unissued M1936 pistol belt no US and marked 1941 R.M. Co. and thought the same as it was a Marine belt but ( Doyle) on the forum here told me this unmarked gear was being sold off in the 1990's in large lots at shows and all this was imported by a British military dealer from out of Russia back them and that's is why it's unmarked because of the lend lease item and many dealer now pass it off as a USMC item.

This information has been posted here before in the past even the Thompson mag pouches and drum pouches were also unmarked.

Hi! I agree, but don't forget the same trouble with Sam Froehlich made pouches. We have 1942 and 1943 pouches with no U.S. on the flap and so far I have not encountered a M1923 Froehlich made pouch U.S. marked...

Well, I got a couple of years ago some mint S.Froehlich 1943 pouches coming from a big crate which doesn't seem - in my opinion - to come from U.R.S.S.

To make the things even more complicated we surely have a1943 Froehlich contract directly with USMC, but in this case it is not a M1923 pouch, but the "double duty" .45-M1 Carbine magazines...

Now I'm asking myself if before starting to make specific pouches for the USMC, Froehlich (and R.M.CO. maybe) gave to the USMC some of their U.S. unmarked M1923 pouches taken from the bunch left from those sent to URSS. After all both these makers made a lot of pistol belts specifically for US Marine Corps...

Just a guess, of course...

In the pictures some 1942 and 1943 Sam Froehlich pouches, the crate and the special pouch made for the USMC...

Backtheattack

Great informations, thank you. Sold years ago a rimmed eagle snap model to a fellow collector. Today I own only the M-1923 one for my World War II belt, and an M-1918 for the World War I belt.
