WWII laundry mark?

Looking at one of my WW1 canteens today, I remembered that it has what I believe to by a laundry mark scratched onto the back (R7054). I can't seem to remember if laundry marks were used going back to WW1. Perhaps you fine folks could enlighten me?

Thanks gents. I have quite a few laundry marked items as well. Interesting about your DUIs though Dave. I just wish there was even an iota of a chance of IDing the owner but the best I'd be able to come up with is a whole bunch of names with no way of positively identifying whose it was
