blackhawkdown Posted February 28, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2015 These photos were taken on some planes that came to my town probably around WW1 time period. Interesting story about the one in the pond. It must have been some sort of recruitment program. The story goes the plane was brought to town on a train, the assembled with the help of a local mechanic. The plane was at the city fairgrounds and when the pilot tried to take off he had engine problems and landed in the pond! I don't think the other plane is the sme one. Can anyone ID them as to make and model?

gwb123 Posted February 28, 2015 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2015 The first one might be a JN4, but I don't believe the second one is. The engine structure is much too high in front of the cockpit, and it seems to have more vertical wing struts than a Jenny. As for the first photo, I'd look first to see if the rudder matches. Sully Posted March 1, 2015 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2015 I've gone through my copy of Jane's Fighting Aircraft of WW1 and the best fit I can find is the Standard Aircraft Corporation H model series. My copy of the book only shows the H3 which is very similar to the second aircraft posted. I believe it could be either and H model or an H1. I am finding very little online about this aircraft maker or it's planes.
blackhawkdown Posted March 1, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted March 1, 2015 The one on the pond looks like it's rudder broke off, all you can see is the little triangle that would be in front. As for the second photo, that unusually tall engine in front is very distinctive.
