mvmhm Posted February 28, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2015 Today I went to the Chillicothe VA Medical Center to observe their periodic VAVS meeting (I'm the VAVS at Dayton now), and after the meeting asked their chief of they had type of museum or like building that told their history - which they do. A little background....what was Camp Sherman in 1917 covered about 8,000 acres, of which the Camp itself covered about 2,000 acres. There was a trench training area, (those can still be seen today as it's part of a park) and an artillery range. Today there's a couple schools, 2 prisons and the VA Medical Center. The building that houses artifacts was originally the homestead of Major General Ralph Mace and his wife. The building was restored circa 1985. The downstairs are used as meeting areas, while upstairs are three smaller rooms. Unfortunately, things aren't too protected from the sun coming in through the windows...there's also a stack of WWI newspapers for people to read...but the pages were laminated in plastic sheets. The labeling is minimal but there's still a few interesting things. Here's the General's portrait which hangs downstairs over a Steinway piano. mvmhm Posted February 28, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted February 28, 2015 One of the rooms (with the laminated papers) is about the days of Camp Sherman...several yard longs, maps, etc.....
mvmhm Posted February 28, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted February 28, 2015 The second room had some older furniture and little militaria (a few modern uniforms) so I didn't take any pictures. The third room seemed to be all WWI, Part 2 stuff. There's 3 footlockers that have thing in them with Plexiglas screwed down over the tops...
