Is anyone here familular with the M-28 & M-29 nuke systems? My understanding is these were very low yield and very short range ( under 3 miles ). I think they were a type of smooth bore recoiless gun setup.

The small Davey Crockett had a range of 2000 yards, the large one 4000 yards. Even with the lowest yield warheads, the firing position was often in the area of effect of the warhead. Last ditch weapon at best. Hard to believe we had people that thought of these things...

Fire in one direction.... drive like heck in the opposite direction. A true last ditch weapon if there ever was one.

Plus... having a nuclear weapon assigned to low level units was probably not smart either.

Probably the same guy that designed the eye-patch for nuke-capable aircrews in those days: you wore the patch over one eye until the nuke flash blinded that eye and then if you were still flying you just moved the eye patch from the good eye to the bad eye...
