FSBE Posted February 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2015 Hey all, Title says it all. I have quite a few USMC canteen covers so it's something I'm proud of as a young collector. Post away gents! John
FSBE Posted February 23, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted February 23, 2015 P2 unit marked and named to Sergeant Stanley R Krol, B Company, 1st Battalion 20th Regiment. His obituary can be found here: http://www.vanhoe.com/mobile/obituaries-details.cfm?o_id=1369853&fh_id=13193#obituaries Stanley is said to be an Iwo Jima and Saipan veteran, and a demolitions specialist. I imagine they just mean he's an engineer. John
FSBE Posted February 23, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted February 23, 2015 P4 canteen cover issued first to a Marine in Weapons Company 25th Marines then issued to Burnard Clarence Kable, B Company 4th Engineer Battalion. He landed on Iwo Jima February 19th and was there until the 29th of March. I have had his archive file pulled and he weighed a staggering 180 pounds in 1943, a huge man at the time. Was also listed as "overweight" in his records. His siter also worked for the same newspaper as Bob Leckie! John
FSBE Posted February 23, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted February 23, 2015 Rear of the cover. Name stamped and unit marked. Also named on the back to another Marine but it's too faint to make out. John

Fausto Posted February 23, 2015 Share #9 Posted February 23, 2015 Hi, here we go... Nothing so special but a couple of items one in near mint and one in mint-unissued condition. The 2nd pattern is marked inside (in blue fading letters) Quartermaster's Dpt. U.S. Marine Corps 1941-42 The 3rd pattern (sorry for the poor pictures) is absolutely mint & unused. Please note the "glue" at the bottom of the hook pad... Fausto

They is. dirty grey ring at the level of a horizontal seam canteen all around. No marks visible exept for two parallel lines on the front, perhaps a marked or washed out name? FSBE Posted February 24, 2015 Author Share #20 Posted February 24, 2015 Here are a couple of mine... post-2677-0-86695700-1400516959.jpg Those have very nice markings! The majority of my UNIS covers look hand done and are very sloppy. Great stuff Dirt Detective. Also I love both or your P1's Steven. That camo painted one is quite a looker! Thanks everyone for your contributions. I still have a few to add as well. John

FSBE Posted February 24, 2015 Author Share #22 Posted February 24, 2015 Here's the rest of what I have. 7 are unit marked and 4 are ID'D. 2 P4s have also had the wired hanger cut off and re-stitched further up on the cover. I assume it's for personal preference but I also heard it could be for BAR belts. John
