bellasilva Posted March 20, 2016 Share #55 Posted March 20, 2016 I'm very excited to be able to post these here- my very first set to a USMC Iwo Jima combat veteran. Mark Lee served as a Field Lineman with the 4th Marine Division, 1st Joint Assault Signal Company. On February 22nd, 1945, he was wounded by shrapnel to the side while on Iwo Jima. He was evacuated to a hospital ship offshore for what should have been a two-week period before returning to duty. He went on to serve with the 1st Marine Division in Korea. He is pictured here around 1952/53, as a tough old SSgt. You can see what I believe to be his Purple Heart ribbon amongst his other ribbons. Included is another dog tag set to him from the Korean War era.
bellasilva Posted April 24, 2016 Share #56 Posted April 24, 2016 Another set I received, Herman Mays served as a truck driver (Heavy) during the invasions of Tinian and Saipan. He later served in the V Amphibious Corps and landed on Iwo Jima on D-Day, February 19th. He served there continuously until March 24th, 1945. He was a Seabee with the 31st NCB wounded at Iwo on the 20th of February I believe. The 31st NCB was attached to the 5th Marine Division and landed with the 2nd wave, H-hour +60 min. twining540 Posted February 21, 2018 Share #63 Posted February 21, 2018 Its been awhile since I have had the time to do anything with tags and thought I would make the time to share this set. The tags and engraved knife belonged to coast guard pharmacist's mate 2nd class Charles Robert Roth. Roth served aboard LST 787. LST 787 was involved in the initial Iwo Jima assault on Feb 19th. Roth is pictured standing up in the middle of his shipmates leading prayer service the day before the invasion.
