Odd Korean War Belt?

I recently received this belt along with items all brought back by a Korean War veteran, and I have no idea what this is. It's a canvas belt with approximately twenty-five loops sewn with elastic (for ammo of some sort?) and is marked "Made in Japan." Since it's a definite bringback (was in the same box brought back from Korea as his other gear and was only just recently opened). I have seen these types of belts floating aroundon ebay and such, but I am completely stumped on this one. Any ideas?

A civilian made belt for holding shotgun shells.. Perhaps it was used by an MP on guard duty at Koji Do Island POW compound or is just a civilian hunting belt the soldier picked up in Japan

Agreed, this belt was made for commercial sale. While not military contracted, it isn't uncommon for soldiers to have purchased things that worked for them. So long as the local commander didn't object..

Interestingly, the belt is little more than a copy of the M1 series gas mask bag shoulder strap. Even the hardware is based off of it.

Belt was more than lkely purchased in the 60s or early 70s.The lable is typical what I saw as a kid in the stores that sold hunting and sporting goods stores
