Thought I'd add a couple pipes from my older stuff: White Clay pipe is Navy I think US late 1700 early 1800's. The brown clay one is a trade pipe I found at the old Seminole Fort site Santa Fe River Ft White ,FL. about 35 - 40 years ago. They look much better from a distance, as remember it was clay poured into a mold and were very cheap just pennys for a case of them so closeup picture shows imperfections. They broke so easily it is hard to find one intact and it is difficult to date them as same mfg way from 1500's in Europe thru our CW or later. I traded for the white one so can only vouch for the one I found the brown one. Richard

I just thought I'd add to my previous post that there was a White Clay pipe company in Glasgow for about a 100 years. I do not know if the 79 is a dater or ? Richard

There seems to be an invisible man standing in front of the guy on the right: all you can see are his boondockers!

Have a great photo of my grandfather sitting in the cockpit of a B-25 during World War 2 that I will find a put up here later. Interesting story about pipe tobacco he told me one day.

We were watching Black Sheep Squadron on tv one Saturday morning. And he says, those guys weren't as bad as the show makes them out to be. Never saw them fighting this much. I was in shock as a kid cause I'm hearing that my grandfather met the Black Sheep. I asked about Boyington and he said no he did not meet him that the only time he talked to them was when he would trade his beer ration for pipe tobacco. Said he did this on more than one occasion.

Not sure if only officers got a pipe tobacco ration or just pilots.

Just thought I would share.

6th MarDiv

Okinawa

May 1945

From a rocky observation post, three of the men who run the show on Okinawa, watch their troops move up on Naha. (left, with field glasses) is LtGen Simon B. Buckner, CG, 10th Army and MGen Lemuel C. Shepherd, center, CG, 6th MarDiv, with his pipe and bamboo cane and 2-star helmet with his assistant commander, BGen William T. Clement.

Smoking my favorite shape of pipe, the bulldog. I'll post a link to a high res version of the photo so you can zoom in on the photo.
