knd643 Posted June 1, 2015 Share #26 Posted June 1, 2015 A Marine on Iwo Jima smoking a pipe in a machine gun emplacement. Could we possibly move this thread to the field and personal gear section so it can get more notice? I know my self I don't come to the misc/unknown section a lot. Pipes are technically personal gear also.

SFMike Posted June 15, 2015 Share #32 Posted June 15, 2015 In VN, they generally were referred to as "bowls." A pipe poking out of a shirtpocket generally indicated a "head."

Rolf Posted September 5, 2015 Share #40 Posted September 5, 2015 I smoked a pipe in the field occasionally, still got this pipe too, actually had this pipe for awhile before, got it like in 78. Haven't in fact smoke it since, but still got it. So did any of youse guys smoke one? I got this pipe in the "Tinderbox" in Anchorage in '73. Used in the field because it was small and fit in a first aid pouch. Placed it next to a .45 round for size comparison. My son now owns it. Legion72 Posted September 7, 2015 Share #41 Posted September 7, 2015 Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill was a pipe smoker, I don't have his picture, but I have one of Lt.Gen. Hal. D. McCown, if I can find it. McCown was SS Colonel Jochem Peiper's prisoner during the Bulge ( 30th ID ) and in Vietnam was MR 4 senior military adviser in 1970. Frank Merrill was commander of the 5307th Composite Unit "Merrill's Marauders." Do you think there were other pipe smokers in the other 5306 Composite Units?? I just bought a fresh can Erinmore tobacco, so I will now go smoke my new $85.00 brier. A Moi La Legion! BILL B.

Dr_rambow Posted October 6, 2015 Share #50 Posted October 6, 2015 And I just have to include this one as it's so cool A British Revolutionary War Reenactor I think in England. Grenadier.jpg I am acquainted with this chap; I see him regularly at events in the northeast USA. Quite an odd fellow, but he always plays the part 100% when he is at events. I don't smoke, but I always envy the cool accessories that can be had with pipes.
