muddyboots Posted February 3, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2015 I picked this grouping up a few years ago from the wife of Steve A Hegyi. He was a member of the 8th Amphibian Tractor Battalion which was involved in the landings at Peleliu and Okinawa. He enlisted in April of 1943 and trained till July of 1944 at which part of the battalion was shipped out for service in the Pacific. They arrived a Pavuvu on 8-20-1944 and shortly began training for Peleliu with a beach landing and 20 mile march and then loaded back up for the assault of Peleliu. After the landings he ran supplies from ship to shore while under sporadic Japanese artillery fire until it was neutralized. At that time he got a few hours to explore the areas around the beaches and airstrip. Eventually he and a friend found a valley off white beach which as he describes as having hundreds of fallen Japanese soldiers and this is where he found the post cards and later had everyone from 2nd Platoon Co. sign them. There are about 92 signatures on them. He was then volunteered as a stretcher bearer on bloody nose ridge till he was relieved in mid October. Steve wrote a lot about his time at Peleliu and Very little about Okinawa. He also wrote a lot about a general court-martial which he was charged for falling asleep on guard duty after the war was over.

Jxx Posted September 10 Share #13 Posted September 10 Hello! I was wondering, for research purposes, how you knew he was a stretcher bearer. Thanks!
