Some N2-a jacket advice

Hi guys

I finally managed to find a lovely mint example of a 1950s N2-a in XL size

Looking at the fur I cannot decide what type of fur it is

It's original, but I always assumed it was some kind of fake fur on these, but it looks real

Like coarse black fur with a thick white layer of fur underneath it

What fur was used on these early N2-a jackets guys

Can anyone tell me ?

Thank you

We had these in the 60's and always said it was horse hair which it probably wasn't. The stuff was awfully coarse and stiff and nobody really liked that type parka because of the stiff hair in the hood.

It possibly is a 60s contract then bud

Your right about it being really rough hair, it feels very coarse.

I do wonder exactly what it is

I have always heard it was Wolf.

The N2A will not be a 60's contract it will be 50's. By the late 50's and into the 60's it is the N2B.

Hi Kammo

I can't really see the edging of it well enough to tell mate

If it is or isn't hide.

I did think it looked fake but I wasn't sure

Thank you for clearing that up

Greetings,

I had also read (and I'll have to look look because I don't remember where) that this is wolverine. It was picked because of the coarseness which made it quite resistant to frost as well as increased durability. I know I've seen it listed as wolverine fur in an old Dave's Army and Navy store ad in an old copy of Flying Magazine. I can't pull the picture of the ad but if someone is able, it's the MAR '61 issue on page 92.

Best,

Peter

Thanks Peter

I appreciate your input bud

It is very coarse and like a black wolverine fur

But I cannot tell 100% either way.

It isn't very nice against the skin, very coarse

Undertoker,

I agree with pbuchh7715 on this as the fur being wolverine, i have asked all the old airlifters who flew in the 1950,s and they all agree that the fur is wolverine

untill there is a definate source on this my vote as i stated before is wolvering

Greetings,

At the secondary home closer to my duty station and only have "Into the Blue" with me which has no flight jackets. Will be in Milwaukee Thursday and the weekend and see if I can find a reference other than a surplus store ad from the early '60's :)

BTW looks like a nice jacket.

Best,

Peter
